Cholombianos who are viral in Mexico, their life is to dance

The Mexican subculture of Cholombianos is one of the most discussed groups. Cholombianos also went viral on social media, especially after a film on Netflix raised their culture.

Cholombianos is believed to have been taken from two words namely 'Cholo' and 'Colombian'. His unique appearance can be seen from his hair that looks different from other Mexican people, his hair in front and back is long and smooth but in the middle it is left bald. The clothes they wear always look too big, plus hat accessories. Because of their unique look, they became viral and widely discussed.

According to the Latin America Bureau, the origin of this subculture comes from Colombian immigrants in America who brought their music with them when they visited Monterrey. Their hobby is rocking which they say is a form of expression of their new culture. They enjoyed their dance to the accompaniment of Cumbia Rebajada music.

When they dance, they will circle together. Their footsteps tend to be short and look a bit like they are sneaking around. While dancing, they form a star symbol with their hands.

However, despite attracting interest from around the world, the Cholombianos culture was 'forced' to disappear from Monterrey after 2010 due to allegations of involvement in organized crime during the massive Calderon presidential riots in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

They are also accused of having links to drug cartels, so the Cholombianos face not only the government but also discrimination from public opinion. As a result of this repression and the need for restraint in an atmosphere of insecurity, the Cholombianos culture was wiped out after a decade.

For Cumbia music, it can still be heard in the hills around Monterrey, but the subculture is barely noticeable to this day.

You can watch the reference to the film Cumbia Callejera (2009) to get to know the Cholombianos culture. In addition, Netflix also released the film 'I'm No Longer Here', adding to the virality of the Cholombianos subculture.
