Elon Musk Criticizes 'Tax' on Apple App Store: Expensive!

Tesla CEO Elon Musk again criticized the tax charged by Apple for every transaction in the App Store. According to him, the cut is too expensive.

Musk called the 30% tax 'not really' and like a tax for the internet imposed by Apple. The criticism was leveled by Musk via his Twitter account, where he said his taxes were 10 times higher than they should be.

"The Apple store is like charging a 30% tax on the internet. It's not really," Musk tweeted.

"It's actually 10 times higher than it should be," he continued in another tweet, which means Apple should only charge a 3% discount for transactions made in the App Store.

Literally 10 times higher than it should be

As is known, Apple charges a 30% discount on app developer revenue derived from transactions in the App Store. This deduction applies to developers whose annual revenue is above USD 1 million.

But Apple has a Small Business Developer Program, where developers whose income is below USD 1 million are subject to a smaller deduction of 15%. Even so, according to Musk, the discounted version is still five times more expensive than it should be.

This isn't the first time the Tesla boss has criticized Apple's App Store. In July 2021, for example, Musk mentioned that Apple had created a walled garden, and Tesla would not do such a thing.

"I think we want to emphasize that the main goal is to support renewable energy. Not by creating a walled park and using it to beat competitors like other companies do," Musk said when answering questions about Tesla's charger network.

Tesla and Apple have always been in trouble. Especially when Apple recruited a number of Tesla engineers as they tried to penetrate the electric car market. In fact, Musk did not hesitate to call Apple a 'Tesla Graveyard'.

"If you're not good enough to work at Tesla, then please work at Apple," he said in 2015.
