Shortly after Elon Musk said he would delay the purchase of Twitter, Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal said he still expected the sale to be successful, but he was prepared for all scenarios.
In a series of tweets, Agrawal did not specifically mention Musk's comments about the delay in the purchase. He said this deal could fail but as CEO he would still lead the company.
"Although I think an agreement will be reached, we must be prepared for all scenarios and do what is right for Twitter," Agrawal said in a tweet.
"I am responsible for leading and operating Twitter, and our job is to build a Twitter that is getting stronger every day."
Musk previously said he would hold off on buying Twitter until he had information about how many bot and spam accounts there were on Twitter. Based on Twitter's financial report in Q1 2022, the number of spam and bot accounts claimed was less than 5%.
In fact, getting rid of bot and spam accounts is one of Musk's focuses to fix Twitter. As the new owner of Twitter, Musk said he would authenticate users as real people to eradicate inauthentic activity.
But the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla can't just cancel this acquisition process. He had to pay a cancellation fee of USD 1 billion and was threatened with being sued for breach of contract.
Agrawal's comments come just a day after Twitter announced it would stop hiring, cancel job offers and cut costs. The company with the bird logo also overhauled management by expelling two executives.
"Our industry is in a very challenging macro environment -- right now," Agrawal said.
"I will not use this deal as an excuse to avoid making decisions important to the health of the company, nor are the other leaders on Twitter," he added.
