Google Will File Bankruptcy And Close Operations In Russia

Google Russia is reportedly going to file bankruptcy in the country as their subsidiaries are having trouble paying the salaries of staff, vendors and suppliers after their accounts were frozen by authorities. Action was taken after the United States imposed economic sanctions on Russia. Since operations were suspended last March, Google has begun relocating staff in Russia to other countries such as Dubai.

Staff who refused to move have already resigned. In addition to the frozen accounts, Google has also been fined 7.22 billion rubles (~ RM495 million) for refusing to block videos showing Russian military operations in Ukraine on YouTube.

With Google's subsidiaries going bankrupt, their physical operations in Russia will be closed. The Android operating system and other free services like YouTube, and Gmail will continue for the time being. Users in Russia have already been barred from subscribing to services with paid applications no longer available for download.
