The Pentagon said several countries had agreed to provide new high -tech weapons assistance to Ukraine. One of them is Denmark, which says it is ready to supply anti -ship missiles, Harpoon.
Harpoon is made by Boeing and comes from the United States and is owned by several countries including Denmark. This missile has been around since 1977 and continues to be renewed for its sophistication.
Harpoon assistance will be one of the first long -range missiles to be aided to Ukraine. In the midst of the Russian offensive, Ukraine needs more sophisticated weapons including anti -ship missiles and long -range rockets.
So far, most of the aid has been short -range missile systems such as the Javelin which, although effective in destroying Russian tanks, have limited reach.
As quoted by us from Reuters, Wednesday (25/5/2022) Harpoon missiles are expected to break through the blockade of Russian ships in Ukrainian ports, so that exports of wheat and other agricultural products can be done again.
"We are especially grateful to Denmark for announcing today that they will provide Harpoon launchers and missiles to help Ukraine defend its ports," said U.S. Secretary of State Lloyd Austin.
He said the U.S. would help deliver more long -range anti -ship missiles. The 3.8 -meter -long harpoon itself can be fired from aircraft, surface ships, submarines, or in coastal defense areas. The price per unit is relatively cheap, about USD 1.5 million.
Harpoon can fly on water to avoid attacks from opponents when targeting its target. The tip has an explosive head weighing 221 kilograms that will explode as soon as it reaches its target.
Harpoon speeds can reach 864 kilometers per hour. The maximum range is about 139 kilometers from the ship and 220 kilometers from the air. It can be different depending on the model. Another advantage, Harpoon is easy to move around.
