On the battlefield, the lives of infantry soldiers are in the hands of medics who provide emergency assistance as quickly as possible. At all times it is important to ensure that members are not killed. DARPA has selected Raytheon to develop an augmented reality (AR) headset that provides emergency assistance recommendations to medics trying to rescue injured military personnel.
The issue on the battlefield is that medics are not doctors or surgeons so they do not have enough in -depth knowledge to provide treatment if more complex procedures are needed. The Medical Assistance, Guidance, Instruction, and Correction (MAGIC) headset is equipped with artificial intelligence that provides recommendations based on video and images of injuries seen.
The project is still in its infancy with the first demonstration expected to take place in 18 months. If it operates later, the treatment method with augmented reality, voice instructions and suggestions to give the dose of medicines will be able to be done by MAGIC.
Previously the U.S. military tried to use Microsoft HoloLens headsets on the battlefield but the project had to be restarted because the device did not pass durability standards when used in the field during testing.
