We are often reminded not to forget to format a computer’s hard disk storage (HDD) before it is sold or given to a recycling center. Yet there is evidence that many do not format properly so that “deleted” data can still be restored using special software. In Japan a store in Akihabara Japan offers a unique HD destroy service to ensure data will not be unreadable.
The Dark Past Final Disposal Site store charges 100 Yen (~ RM3.45) to destroy the HDD using a professional Nitto Zoki DB-60PRO machine. Four iron rods will penetrate the hard drive and the body of the HDD to be destroyed. With this system the probability of data being stolen is low.
This service has been offered since 2020. People can just destroy HDDs using home tools like hammers but metal fragments can be dangerous. With this professional system, HDD removal is done safely and its effectiveness is guaranteed.
