US Government Sues Twitter For User Privacy

The United States government is suing Twitter for misleading information about its use of user data for advertising.

The lawsuit, which was filed in the Northern District of California court, focuses on how Twitter handles its users' data, and how it does not inform users about its use of that data for targeted advertising.

In the lawsuit, the US government focuses on the time span between May 2013 and September 2019. During that time, Twitter was accused of misleading users by saying that the user's phone number and email address were used exclusively to protect Twitter accounts.

In fact, during that time, user data was also used as information for advertisers to target their ads to Twitter users, as quoted by us from Phone Arena, Saturday (27/5/2022).

But the US government's lawsuit does not end there. The US government also accused Twitter of failing to ensure tweets and DMs from locked accounts could not be accessed by Twitter employees.

According to Twitter, they tricked users into saying they could send private direct messages, which only the recipient could see. But the problem is, the lawsuit states that Twitter does not have adequate protection features to ensure this security.

They were also accused of not closing access to this information to their employees in certain divisions.

Twitter's problem is not just that. Previously, Twitter shareholders also sued Elon Musk for the chaos caused by the acquisition process. The impact is the volatility of changes in the company's stock price.

Investors say Musk saved $156 million by not disclosing that he had bought more than 5% of Twitter on March 14.

They also sued Twitter as a defendant, arguing the company had an obligation to investigate Musk's behavior, despite not seeking damages from the company.

Investors said Musk continued to buy shares after that, and finally revealed in early April that he owned 9.2% of the company, according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday in San Francisco federal court.
