China's Supercomputer Is Now The World's Fastest With 5.3 exaFLOP Capability

At the end of last May, Top500 crowned Frontier as the world's fastest supercomputer with the ability to process 1,102 exaFLOP which also made it the first supercomputer capable of processing on the scale of Exa. But according to a South China Morning Post report today, scientists from China announced their latest -generation supercomputer has the ability to process 5.3 exaFLOP.

The latest generation of Sunway computers, whose name has not been revealed, have a CPU with 32 million cores which is four times more than the Frontier. In the artificial intelligence training test nicknamed Bagualu a total of 174 trillion parameters are used which is like the number of synapses in the human brain. Six years ago the Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer also dai China managed to become the fastest in the world.

Therefore, Sunway is able to perform artificial intelligence processes on a "brain scale" that is similar to how the human brain works. When matched with 9 petabytes of memory, Sunway's ability to process is extremely fast.

With this Exa scale capability, Sunway can be made to study artificial intelligence, perform meteorological forecasts, estimates for chemicals and more.

The new generation Sunway was not included in the Top500 list because China no longer openly shares their supercomputer capabilities for national security reasons. Last year, seven Chinese supercomputer companies were included in a list of entities by the United States because of concerns about technology being used for military purposes.
