Family Mart and Lawson department stores will use robots instead of employees refilling stock at the store. The robot will be controlled by human workers from home using virtual reality headsets. The Telexistence company that supplies these robots has announced a salary offer to interested "robot drivers" and it is quite lucrative.
The basic salary offered is 1,450 Yen (~ RM50) per hour with those who have to work four days a day with shifts of 9 hours a day. It increases to 1800 Yen (~ RM62) per hour if working on a night shift.
But unlike the original plan, drivers will have to work from the Telexistence office in Tokyo. They only need to take control of the robot in case of a problem because the robots have been programmed to perform the task of replenishing stock automatically by artificial intelligence.
Concierge tasks are now beginning to be replaced by robots as well as artificial intelligence in Japan due to manpower shortages.
