Elon Musk discussed with Twitter employees for the first time after revealing his plans to buy the social media company for $44 billion. In the discussion, Musk talked about many things, from the news of layoffs to the existence of aliens.
Musk, who was expected to calm Twitter employees in his first meeting, did not provide an update on the company's acquisition. He reiterated that his current focus is on studying the issue of bits and spam accounts on Twitter.
Through the virtual discussion, Musk said he wanted to increase the number of Twitter users from 229 million to at least one billion.
The SpaceX and Tesla CEO also believes that advertising will still be an important business for Twitter despite previously saying that Twitter should not show ads.
"I think advertising is very important to Twitter. I'm not against advertising. I'll probably talk to an advertiser and say, hey, let's make sure the ad is as attractive as possible,'" Musk said as quoted by Reuters on Friday (17/6/2022).
Asked if he would cut Twitter's workforce, Musk said there needed to be a rationale for the company's workforce and spending.
"Currently, costs exceed revenue. Anyone who is a significant contributor (employee-ed) shouldn't have to worry," he said.
In addition to the issue of layoffs, Musk was also asked about the work from home policy by Twitter employees. As is well known, Musk recently asked Tesla employees to return to work at the office while Twitter is still allowing work from home, even offering a permanent WFH option.
Answering the question, Musk said Twitter employees should be more inclined to work in the office, but he was willing to make some exceptions.
"I support working directly (in the office), but if someone is doing great, then working from home is fine," Musk said.
Musk's acquisition of Twitter was met with skepticism by some Twitter employees. Many worry that Twitter's content moderation will loosen up once Musk takes over.
The world's richest man said he believes Twitter users should be allowed to tweet anything, even content deemed offensive, as long as the content is not illegal.
At the end of his discussion, Musk turned the topic of conversation about outer space, the age of Earth, and the possibility of alien civilizations on other planets. He admitted that at this time he had not seen evidence of the existence of aliens.
