In the end, the United States agreed to deliver advanced weapons that Ukraine requested to be more powerful against Russia. The weapons in question are modern multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS).
The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has stated that he agrees to send more precise rocket and munition systems to Ukraine. However, there is one condition, namely that the weapon is used in Ukraine and does not fire at targets in Russia.
"America's goals are clear, we want a democratic, independent, sovereign and prosperous Ukraine with self-defense capabilities. We are not seeking war between NATO and Russia," Biden wrote in the New York Times.
The MLRS has been requested by Ukrainian officials mainly because of its long reach. However, there is also concern that if the weapons were fired at Russia, the conflict could get worse.
As for the weapons that were sent, as quoted by us from the Guardian, the MLRS type M142 Himars (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System). The version delivered to Ukraine can shoot up to 80 kilometers.
There are variants that can reach targets even further, but as noted, there are concerns that they will be used to shoot deep into Russian territory and the technology will not be given to Ukraine.
"Ukraine is ready to strike back. To do this, we need the MLRS from NATO. Immediately," the request from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense reads.
"Russia is currently using artillery strongly. To fight it, to save the lives of our soldiers and civilians, we need MLRS rockets," said Oleksandr Merezkho of the Ukrainian parliament. Now their request has been granted.
