Google Unites Duo and Meet, So You Can Fight WhatsApp?

Rumors circulating in August 2020 turned out to be true, Google announced that it would unify Duo and Meet into one platform. To be able to fight WhatsApp?

In its official blog, Google said the merger of the two services will be carried out at the end of the year. So that created a free video communication service called Google Meet.

Before the app was renamed, Google would add the current Google Meet feature to Duo. That means Google Duo users will be able to schedule online meetings in advance, customize virtual backgrounds, use chat during online meetings, and display captions in real time and last but not least the limit from 32 to 100 participants.

Duo users don't have to worry about the convenience this app offers. Because calling features will not be removed, including the ability to initiate video calls using a phone number or email address. All conversation history, contacts, and messages will continue to be stored in the app, and there will be no new apps to download.

"This integrated experience will provide users with a single solution for video calling and meeting people throughout their lives," wrote Google VP Javier Soltero.

Please note that Google has increased its investment in video communications and digital collaboration tools in recent years. This is inseparable from the COVID-19 pandemic which has encouraged people to look for new communication tools.

The duo itself was introduced in 2016 together with Allo. On its way, the Allo service was retired by Google.

Meanwhile Duo continues to be developed. Google recently introduced features such as group calling for up to 32 people, doodles and fun effects in family mode; and video call support on tablets, foldables and TVs.
