Scientists reveal there are about four alien civilizations that may exist in the Milky Way Galaxy. These four alien nations are called dangerous and have the potential to attack Earth if they continue to receive messages from humans.
This is a new experiment initiated by Alberto Caballero, an amateur astronomer and conflict resolution student at the University of Vigo in Spain. Cabalerro previously claimed to have found the source of the alien signal 'WOW' through his research published in the International Journal of Astrobiology.
Through his latest paper entitled 'Estimating the Prevalence of Malicious Extraterrestrial Civilizations', Caballero gives his predictions about the number of dangerous alien civilizations.
He hopes this study can help other scientists to take the practice of Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence (METI) more seriously and determine how much danger will arise if humans continue to try to contact aliens.
It should be noted that Caballero's study is only a 'thought experiment' and has not been verified by other astronomers. The purpose of the estimate is to unravel the mystery of how many alien civilizations might be able to return the messages we send.
To get to that figure, Caballero counted the number of invasions that had occurred on Earth over the last 50 years. He then used that data and applied it to an estimate of the number of exoplanets in the Milky Way. According to data from the Italian SETI scientist Claudio Maccone, there are 15,785 civilizations in the Milky Way.
According to Caballero's calculations, there are four civilizations that are potentially dangerous and have the potential to attack Earth. But the possibility of an alien attack occurring in the near future is very small.
"The probability of a space invasion by a civilization whose planet we are sending messages to is about two times lower than the probability of a planet-killing asteroid impact," Caballero said in his paper, as quoted from Vice, Tuesday (31/5/2022).
Caballero added that there may be less than one dangerous alien civilization in the Milky Way that has mastered space travel. These four civilizations are also predicted to have the same level of technological sophistication as humans.
Caballero concludes that the more sophisticated a civilization is, the less likely it is that it will attack another civilization, indicating that an alien civilization that could destroy Earth may not be interested in launching an attack because it is so advanced.
"I created this paper based on life as we know it. We don't know the mind of aliens. Alien civilizations may have brains with different chemical compositions and they may not have empathy like ours or they may have psychopathological behaviours."
