Facebook is still the world's largest social media platform with billions of monthly users. Their dominance began to be challenged by TikTok which had younger users needed to continue operations. According to a report by The Verge, in a memo distributed to staff, Meta wanted Facebook to more closely resemble the experience of using TikTok.
This is not limited to just displaying Reels on a timeline for non -stop short video viewing but also testing displaying other users ’content randomly on a timeline based on an algorithm as TikTok does. Among other recommendations is to return Messenger into the app after it became a standalone app since 2011.
This isn’t the first time Facebook has changed to compete with other apps. Before TikTok, Snapchat challenged Facebook until they provided a similar feature inside Instagram. But the challenge posed by TikTok is more intense as current users prefer to watch video rather than text which has been Facebook’s main mode of communication since its launch.
