Data analytics firm Sensor Tower revealed that Netflix's Mobile Game has generated more than 13 million downloads globally on the App Store and Google Play Store.
This number has increased by five million since January 2022. To date, Netflix has published 24 mobile game titles that users can play with their Netflix account as reported by us from Pocket Gamer, Monday (20/6/2022).
1984's Stranger Things was the most popular game title, with nearly two million downloads, followed by Netflix's Asphalt Xtreme, with 1.8 million installs, and Stranger Things 3: The Game in third place with 1.5 million downloads.
However, this estimate does not include downloads from BonusXP's original Stranger Things: The Game release, which generated 13.8 million downloads before being removed from the App Store and Google Play in 2021.
Since entering the gaming market, downloads for Netflix games have grown to over a million per month, with 2.3 million in December 2021 alone, and 1.4 million in May 2022.
While Netflix has published both licensed and original titles, their adaptation to existing IPs has proven to be key to the company's strategy in the gaming market. Both Stranger Things titles experienced a spike in downloads around the show's release of the first half of season four on May 27, for a combined total of over 198,000 installs between May 27 and June 2.
Netflix has also made acquisitions for internal development, including Next Games which has generated 43 million downloads and earned approximately USD 187 million from its portfolio of mobile titles, including 29.4 million downloads for their top game The Walking Dead: No Man's Land.
While Netflix is known for its streaming services, its presence in gaming opens up important new revenue streams for competing in an increasingly crowded streaming market, with new IP-based titles such as The Queen's Gambit and Shadow and Bone having recently been released.
