U.S. Supreme Court Rejects Apple's Appeal To Revoke Qualcomm Modem Patent

The U.S. high court has declined to hear Apple’s application seeking to revoke two modem patents held by Qualcomm. Earlier in 2019 Apple agreed to pay Qualcomm RM18 billion to settle a lawsuit between the two companies as well as use Qualcomm modems for six years with the option to connect them for another two years.

Although an out -of -court agreement was signed, Apple was allowed to appeal two modem patents held by Qualcomm. Even so the court found Apple had no strong reason to challenge Qualcomm’s patent because of a previously agreed agreement.

It is for this reason that Apple is still continuing its efforts to develop its own production modems with Qualcomm itself targeting this to happen as early as 2023. This effort is done through Intel’s modem business which has been taken over by Apple in 2019.
