Waymap Navigation Application For The Visually Impaired Does Not Require GPS Or Internet To Function

There are several navigation apps and smart sticks designed for use by the visually impaired. But it all depends on GPS and internet connection to operate. So for that reason the Waymap app has been developed by a firm in the UK with it being able to operate independently.

Instead the Waymap relies on sensors on the smartphone to provide accurate navigation guidance. The device’s barometer, accelerometer and magnetometer sensors form the basis of inertia -based navigation systems. This is a system that has long been used by missiles and aircraft before GPS was widely used.

According to the developers of Waymap, their system has an accuracy of up to 1 meter and provides navigation instructions using voice commands that can help the visually impaired. Although designed for the disabled, it can also be used by the public because their inertial navigation system provides accurate navigation in buildings that is typically difficult on applications that rely on GPS satellites.

The Waymap has been successfully tested by the visually impaired on the Washington DC subway system. The app can also be used for free with user data not being stored to ensure privacy. Currently Waymap can only be used in Washington DC only before more cities and maps are added.
