During the COVID-19 pandemic, Chromebooks and Zoom experienced rapid growth. Both are very useful when you have to do work or school at home due to the lockdown.
However, currently Zoom is reported to be shutting down its Chromebook application which will be closed in August 2022, as reported by us from 9to5google, Saturday (18/6/2022).
"This app will no longer be officially supported after August 2022. Please use the new Zoom for Chrome PWA to join meetings on ChromeOS," reads the notice on the Zoom app on Chromebooks.
Zoom on Chromebooks itself has been available for several years by providing simple access like Zoom meetings without any additional functionality. It is also very limited when it comes to most features and hasn't gotten a major update in quite some time.
This is why the Zoom app is shutting down because it's partly built on aging technology. Older apps are traditional Chrome apps that haven't been very relevant for a few years now.
Most notably, in August 2020 Google has announced that they will be removing the Chrome app on all platforms for Windows, Mac, and Linux where support ends in June 2021.
Starting June 2022, Google is also deprecating Chrome apps on Chrome OS, with new apps no longer being accepted and all existing apps being private and unlisted in the Chrome Web Store.
With that in mind, it's no surprise that Zoom will end official support for the app. But as further motivation, Zoom is debuting as a progressive web app for Chromebooks in 2021, which has seen several major updates over the past year.
