3D Print Implants Restore Breasts Naturally After Mastectomy Surgery

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in Malaysia. Every 1 in 19 Malaysian women is at risk of developing this disease in their lifetime. After being detected, one of the drastic steps that need to be taken is to perform a mastectomy to remove the part that is already infected with cancer.

Among the follow -up treatments given to recovering patients is placing silicone implants or using other parts of the body such as the back of the thighs to build new breasts. Both of these surgeries have their respective advantages and disadvantages.

Lattice Medical a medical technology company has created 3D printed implants that they say will allow the recipient’s body cells to rebuild the breast naturally. These hollow implants contain a sample of the recipient’s body cells that will then produce a layer of fat that fills the void. After 18 months, the implants will dissolve in the body naturally.

The implant, which will use the Matisse name, will begin human clinical trials on July 11 to see if it is safe to use. The advantage of Matisse is that it does not need to be replaced every 10 years like silicone implants and does not leave scars on the body parts of the meat taken to produce new breasts.
