Apple Awarded Patent Screen That Still Detects Touch Even When Wet

Touch screens on smartphones are an innovation that is changing how we interact. All the world’s smartphones now come with touch screens with various levels of detection. But you’re sure to realize the downside of a touch screen is that it doesn’t work well when it’s wet. Apple has been awarded a patent that allows the screen to still be used when wet and even under the surface of water.

The patent shows the screen has no modes i.e. dry, wet and below the water surface. When detected by the device, the screen detection level will increase and also the interface of the device will change. In underwater mode for example, the camera button will be larger to make it easier to press. The patent was filed in March 2021 and was only awarded to Apple on June 28.

The existence of a patent does not mean it will be used by Apple on actual products. Some of the patents they hold still remain concepts on paper only.
