ASUS ROG Phone 6 Pro Review - An Unparalleled Device Performance Highlights

The ASUS ROG Phone series of smart devices can be said to popularize the concept of gaming smart devices, by combining powerful processing power with aggressive design that can be seen on various desktop and laptop computer designs produced by the brand.

The ASUS ROG Phone 6 device series is the latest addition in the series, and during its official launch, has featured two models, including the ASUS ROG Phone 6 and also the ASUS ROG Phone 6 Pro.

We’ve had the opportunity to review the more sophisticated model in the series, namely the ASUS ROG Phone 6 Pro which comes with the most powerful device specs to date, along with a more aggressive design between the two devices on display.

The ASUS ROG Phone 6 Pro comes with a 6.78 -inch Samsung AMOLED display at a resolution of 2448 × 1080 with a refresh rate as high as 165Hz. It also comes with a brightness value as high as 1200 nit and support for HDR10+ display technology that promises precise color processing, in addition to completely dark black.

The left side of the device houses several functions, including a power button, an audio volume scrolling button and even an AirTrigger 6 capacitive button. For this time, this capacitive button looks bigger, and has additional functions that we’ll explain later.

At the bottom of the device is the device’s first USB Type-C charging plug, and even more interesting is the 3.5mm audio plug that allows users to plug their wired earphones into the device.

We are pretty sure that this ROG Phone 6 series is one of a number of premium gaming class devices that still have this 3.5mm audio plug for those who still love using their audiophile class wired earphones.

On the right side of this device is the second USB Type-C plug of this device, which can be used to charge this device while it is playing or to power the latest ROG AeroActive Cooler accessory from ASUS, which we will also tell in more detail later.

On the back of the ROG Phone 6 Pro is a three-lens camera system that uses a Sony IMX766 sensor, a 13MP ultra-wide camera and also a macro camera for close-up photography. For the front view camera, this device comes with a 12MP Sony IMX663 sensor.

On the back of the ROG Phone 6 Pro also comes with a small display called ROG Vision which was previously seen on ROG Phone 5 Ultimate devices as well as ROG Phone 5S. This display can show interesting animations that can be modified through the built-in Armory Crate software.

Specifications

For the Malaysian market, the ASUS ROG Phone 6 series is the first device to come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processing chip, an upgrade to Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 launched late last year.

For the ROG Phone 6 Pro, the device also uses 18GB of LPDDR5 memory and 512GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage, which in our opinion is fast enough and large enough to power a large number of giants released now, such as Genshin Impact, Honkai Impact 3rd or Call of Duty Mobile.

For the ROG Phone 6 device, it comes with 12GB and 16GB LPDDR5 memory options, and uses the same UFS 3.1 storage at 256GB and 512GB storage options.

In terms of software, the ROG Phone 6 Pro uses the Android 12 operating system with a ROG UI interface where ASUS promises at least two operating system updates and a security update for two years.

In terms of audio, the ROG Phone 6 maintains the use of stereo speakers, this time using a 5 -magnet audio system with a Cirrus Logic CS35L45 amplifier that not only promises loud audio sound, but also high quality, especially when you watch videos or listen to songs on platforms such as Netflix, YouTube or Spotify.

The ROG Phone 6 also still uses a 6000mAH battery that is split in two with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 processing chip separating it. It also comes with a 65W fast charging function, and comes with a charger that supports such fast charging technology.

The design of separating the battery into two parts is not a new concept. In fact, ASUS is seen as a pioneer of this design in smart devices to ensure that the battery part does not become so fast when used while charging.

Even with the ROG Phone 6, ASUS has further upgraded the built -in cooling system through the GameCool 6 cooling system which combines the use of a vapor chamber cooling system and also graphite sheets at the top and bottom of the device's processing chip and battery.

ASUS says that there are three levels of cooling for this ROG Phone 6 device, where for normal day -to -day use, a sheet of graphite is enough to keep the device’s temperature low. For the use of applications such as YouTube, Netflix or the usual first, the steam chamber cooling system will be utilized to cool the chip.

If you’re the type who always uses a smart gaming device to play firsts that require more power, the latest ROG AeroActive Cooler accessory is your partner in ensuring this device can operate at optimal temperatures.

Below we will describe a little about the accessories given to us to use.

Accessory

The two accessories sent to us for use in conjunction with this ROG Phone 6 Pro device are the ROG AeroActive Cooler 6 and also the ROG Kunai 3 game controller.

Starting with the ROG AeroActive Cooler 6, it is a cooling fan that uses the Peltier concept that converts electrical energy into refrigerator-like cooling power. ASUS says that by using this cooler, the ROG Phone 6 device can be cooled up to 25 degrees lower than normal temperatures.

But in our test, it wasn’t that easy. When this cooler is used to cool a device in the idle state, it is true that the temperature of the device can be lower than 30 degrees Celsius, and quite cold when held.

In the first use, with games like Genshin Impact, where we set the graphics settings to a high level, we found that the temperature of the device remained around 35-38 degrees Celsius when using this AeroActive Cooler 6 cooler.

Another thing we love is that this cooler also comes with control buttons that can be modified via the Armory Crate software when installed on the device. Theoretically, with this cooler, the user has 18 buttons that can be modified if needed.

ROG Kunai 3 is a game controller accessory that can be used wirelessly or connected to a ROG Phone 6 device using the frame provided.

In our opinion, this ROG Kunai game controller shows its best functionality when used to play games through streaming services such as on Xbox, PlayStation, Google Stadia and so on.

If you only use this device to drive first, perhaps the ROG AeroActive Cooler 6 cooler is more worth buying.

Software

The ASUS ROG Phone 6 series of devices comes with the Android 12 operating system with the ROG UI interface shown to come with a design similar to what was offered previously. The interface of this device, although seen to be quite inclined towards an aggressive gamer design, is still quite clean and easy to use.

The ASUS ROG Phone 6 series of devices comes with updated ASUS Armory Crate software to make it easy for you to easily change various settings of this device. These include changing the CPU overtime mode, initial optimizations installed on the device, modification of the AirTrigger 6 capacitive buttons and so on.

For the ROG Phone 6 Pro device, an additional feature that can be seen through the Armory Crate is the activation and modification of the animated logo on the ROG Vision display on the back of the device. Users are given a choice of several logos to use when the screen is open and when the first is in active use.

X-Mode overhaul mode is back once again to allow users to take advantage of the overhaul functionality first introduced through the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processing chip on the first ASUS ROG Phone.

What's new on the ASUS ROG Phone 6 is the additional X-Mode+override capabilities. This mode will automatically reboot your device when the AeroActive Cooler 6 accessory is installed on this device, and promises even better device performance at more optimal device temperatures.

Just like before, the function of AirTrigger 6 is to make it easier for users to access the buttons inside the first using the buttons on the shoulder of the device. With the introduction of the new AirTrigger system, the functionality of this capacitive button is further extended with a motion sensor system that allows users to use the motion of the device as a shortcut control as well.

These are the accessories offered in this ASUS ROG Phone 6 Pro box:

1x ASUS ROG Phone 6 Pro

1x USB-A to USB-C charger cable.

1x 65W Charger

1x Silicone frame.

Conclusion

The ASUS ROG Phone 6 can be seen as the culmination of the design, features and performance that can be seen from a gaming device. The combination of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processing chip with a Samsung AMOLED HDR10+ display and the use of a stereo speaker system makes this device a multimedia device, and not just the best gaming I’ve ever used.

At the RM4999 price tag, the ROG Phone 6 Pro device may be a little hard to recommend, but if you want a device for the most extreme and powerful first right now, this is the only option available on the market right now.

If you can’t get this Pro model device, you can also get the ASUS ROG Phone 6 model with 16GB memory and 512GB storage options, and I’m sure it will be almost on par with what is offered on the ROG Phone 6 Pro.
