By 2027, a quarter of the world's population will be covered by 5G networks

5G networks are relatively new in various parts of the world. However, it is estimated that there will be as many as one billion 5G users by the end of 2022 and by 2027 it will reach 4.4 billion users.

In the latest Ericsson Mobility Report, the reason for the skyrocketing use of the fifth generation cellular network is the increase in the use of smartphones and mobile broadband, as well as the digitization of society and industry.

Ericsson noted that recent statistics and forecasts highlight the current and expected strong demand for data connectivity and digital services, despite the worldwide pandemic and geopolitical uncertainty.

The Ericsson Mobilty Report predicts that current global 5G subscriptions will pass the one billion mark by the end of 2022. By 2027, 5G users will account for 82% of subscriptions in Western Europe, 80% in the Gulf Cooperation region. Council/CGC) and 46% in Southeast Asia and Oceania.

This edition of the report also verifies that 5G networks are evolving faster than all previous generations of mobile technology. About a quarter of the world's population currently has access to 5G coverage.

In addition, during the first quarter of 2022, there was an additional 70 million 5G subscriptions. By 2027, about three quarters of the world's population will be able to access 5G networks. Globally, 5G is expected to cover nearly half of all subscriptions by 2027, surpassing 4.4 billion users.

"The latest Ericsson Mobility Report confirms 5G as the fastest growing mobile technology generation ever, and Ericsson is playing a key role in making it happen," said Ericsson Executive Vice President and Head of Network, Fredrik Jejdling in a press release.

The report also highlights the increasing importance of Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) in broadband service delivery. Ericsson expects the number of FWA connections to exceed 100 million by 2022, a number that is expected to more than double by 2027, reaching nearly 230 million.

As for the Internet of Things (IoT), the report notes that by 2021, broadband IoT (4G/5G) will overtake 2G and 3G as the technology that connects the largest share of all IoT-connected mobile devices, accounting for 44% of all IoT-enabled mobile devices. connection.

Massive IoT technologies (NB-IoT, Cat-M) increased by almost 80% during 2021, reaching nearly 330 million connections. The number of IoT devices connected to this technology is expected to exceed 2G/3G by 2023
