The Indian government has stepped up investigations into device manufacturers from China in recent months. The assets of Xiaomi, Vivo and Oppo have been frozen after being accused of trying to avoid taxes and engaging in money laundering. Today according to a South China Morning Post report, Honor CEO George Zhao has recalled the company's staff from India.
He was quoted as saying that action was taken for "substantial reasons" referring to the investigation carried out by the Indian authorities on a telecommunications company from China. Honor still continues to do business in India but is now managed by their business partner.
The conflict between India and China in 2020 caused strained relations between the two countries. In the early stages the production of various electronic devices was affected as components were prevented from entering India by the authorities. Then more than 200 applications from China such as TikTok, WeChat and PUBB Mobile were banned because they allegedly could be used to spy on Indian citizens.
