Intel announced a partnership with MediaTek, namely chip production for Mediatek at Intel Foundry Services.
The aim of this collaboration is to provide MediaTek with a more balanced supplier, by partnering with chipmakers in the United States and Europe, as quoted by GSM Arena, Tuesday (26/7/2022).
Previously Intel also signed a similar agreement with Qualcomm. Previously, Intel was better known as a company that designs and manufactures chips for themselves.
However, starting in 2021, they began to open their chip production facilities for other companies, namely by releasing Intel Foundry Services (IFS). MediaTek was one of the first major consumers for the service.
"As one of the makers of fabless chips that are used in more than 2 billion devices per year, MediaTek is a perfect partner for IFS as it enters the next stage of development," said Randhir Thakur, President of Intel Foundry Services.
"We have the right combination of advanced process technology and geographically dispersed capacity to help MediaTek reach a billion connected devices across applications."
Intel did not specifically mention the contents of the cooperation agreement. But what is clear is that Intel says that Mediatek plans to use Intel technology to produce a number of chips that will be used in various devices.
"MediaTek has long adopted a multi-courcing strategy. We have a cooperation agreement to manufacture 5G data cards with Intel, and we are expanding our cooperation to produce smart edge devices using Intel Foundry Services," said NS Tsai, Corporate SVP Platform Technology & Manufacturing Operations at MediaTek. .
"With its commitment to increasing capacity, IFS provides Mediatek an advantage as we continue to look for opportunities to break up the supply chain," he added.
Geographically, IFS does have its own advantages over other chipmakers such as TSMC and Samsung. The two rivals are located in Asia, while Intel is in the United States, and will expand to Europe.
