Oppo Reno8 Pro Review – Landmark Photography Performance in a Mid-Class Device

Undoubtedly, Oppo Find X5 Pro is a device that is closely related to the camera performance is quite good. The 50MP main sensor used on the device is capable of recording good photos and videos in almost all lighting conditions, especially low light. However, many are not happy with the sale price offered because it is considered too expensive.

As an alternative, Oppo is now bringing the feature into the body of a mid-range device through the Reno8 Pro. It is the second device to support the Marisilicon X chip, while the main sensor used on this device has the same DNA as the Find X5 Pro. But the question is, can the same imaging system experience be felt on this device? The answer is in this review article.

The body of the Oppo Reno8 Pro is now more boxy. However, it does not show significant differences with some previous models. Glad to say, the design is the same as used on Oppo Reno6 and Oppo Reno 7 Pro. The significant changes made by Oppo lie in the large screen size and higher refresh rate. It is 6.7-inches with an AMOLED panel, 120Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ display. Apart from that, the size of the bezel on all four sides is also equally thin which makes it look balanced.

The existence of a hole on the screen for placing the selfie camera can also be found. One thing we noticed, the rear finish is also now smoother through the use of glass-based materials. Oppo Glow concept design is no longer used, instead this device comes with a simple but attractive style. Our review unit is the Oppo Reno8 Pro in Glazed Green finish. As an option, it is also offered in Glazed Black with a neat and simple black plain shade. The back of the device is decorated with a glossy green finish throughout.

The biggest change can also be seen on the camera bump. On us, the Contour Cut Design elements as used on the previous Samsung Galaxy S22 series can be seen clearly. It's just that the camera bump on the Oppo Reno8 looks bigger and more prominent as a result of which the device cannot be placed flat even with the use of a frame. The lens arrangement is also quite unique without any protruding bumps. Through it, two large-sized lenses are matched with one small lens in different positions. Near the main camera is also located LED Flash in a round shape. In addition, there is ISP Marisilicon branding on the camera module along with the Oppo logo placed on the bottom.

The MediaTek Dimensity 8100 processing chip is used with 12GB RAM memory based on LPDDR5. Meanwhile, the internal storage capacity is 256GB based on UFS 3.1. This is a pretty good combination even though the device does not support additional slots using microSD. Next, the included 4,500mAh capacity battery supports an 80W fast charging system. The charging head is also provided free of charge with a cable with a white USB-A to USB-C connection. No wireless charging support is still forgivable for such a mid-spec device.

The main camera uses a tri-camera system with a configuration of 50-Megapixel (Sony IMX766) + 8-Megapixel (ultra-wide) + 2-Megapixel (macro) and the selfie camera is 32-Megapixel using a Sony IMX709 sensor. The camera is capable of taking pictures at 1:1, 4:3, 16:9 and full aspect ratios. A number of additional photography functions are also included to enable a variety of photo and video recordings to be produced. Among them are Pro, Extra HD, Pano, Macro, Film, Slo-Mo, Time-Lapse, Dual-View Video, Sticker, Text Scanner and Soloop Template. In Portrait mode, there are several special effects that can be applied to photos. At the highest settings, videos can be recorded at 4K resolution at 30fps and a built-in video stabilization system is also included.

The metal power button is located on the right side. Synonymous with most devices under the Reno series, this button comes with a green marking ornament. The audio adjustment button is located on the left side. Speaking of connection ports, the Oppo Reno8 Pro uses a USB-C port placed at the bottom of the device. Here there is also a SIM slot and does not support a microSD card, in addition to a speaker with a stereo audio system. Also loaded into the body of this device weighing 183 grams is a fingerprint scanner built into the screen and an AI-based face scan for security purposes.

If you notice, what exactly is not included in this device? The answer is a 3.5mm audio jack. This is the same thing happened on some previous Reno models like Reno5, Reno6 and Reno7 Pro. This will simultaneously cause discomfort among users who depend on wired earphones. The body of the Reno8 Pro also does not pass any waterproof and dustproof standards. This situation creates an error because no additional protection is provided to prevent the device from being easily damaged in the event of a disaster. While there are only other brands that offer this feature on the device and are also sold at a lower price.

Usage Experience

Overall, the design on this device is good, neat, feels premium and most importantly comfortable to hold. The back finish with a brand new color shade is also a major highlight of the device. However, the back panel has a smooth finish that easily traps dirt. It's very smooth, but we're grateful to Oppo for also giving us a free silicone frame in the box.

Next, the combination of a flat screen and a thin bezel size also helps in further increasing the surface area. With an AMOLED screen and FHD+ resolution, the screen looks beautiful and sharp. The viewing angle also looks good. Use in bright sunlight is also satisfactory as the screen content is easy to read. Our attempt to watch videos on Youtube also found that it has 1080P support. The included 120Hz refresh rate works well. Scrolling feels smooth but this screen doesn't support adaptive refresh rate which saves more battery.

Undoubtedly, users are actually quite skeptical about the use of MediaTek chips on a smart device. Many thought that the device powered by the chip would face extreme heating issues. It however does not happen on this device. The Dimensity 8100- Max is basically the same as the standard variant but loaded with dedicated AI capabilities for better overall performance. The closest competitor for this chip is the Snapdragon 870.

In our case, the device is able to function well without chronic issues. At the same time, no overheating issues were found and even heat production was good. Nevertheless, the Antutu benchmark score recorded by Reno8 Pro (705,712) is seen as low compared to Realme GT Neo3 (742,992) and Poxo X4 GT (751,720) which are also powered by the same chip.

The ColorOS 12.1 launcher is used and it is based on Android 12. The interface design is neat with quite a minimalistic touch. No sudden changes, in fact it can be said to be user-friendly. It can also be customized for several features such as the Always-On-Display function with a brand new pattern, screen color settings according to the user's eyes, 3D avatar animation called Omoji and features such as the following :

Flexible Windows – Experience multitasking more efficiently through floating windows.

Air Gestures Touchless Freedom – Gesture support for touchless scrolling

Multi-Screen Connect – Connection of multiple devices such as your computer and mobile phone and device clone will be sent to PC for quick access.

Anti-Peeping – Hidden notifications when detecting someone else is looking at the device screen

Require Password To Power Off – Password control to turn off the device.

Quick Return – Quick access to return to any application by tapping on the return window.

Quick Launch – Quick access to frequently used applications or functions.

Smart Sidebar – Activate the sidebar to allow apps to launch quickly.

Kid Space – Use will be safer for children to access.

Simple Mode – Text & icons become larger. Audio also sounds louder.

Personally, we feel that the quality of the photos that can be taken using the Reno8 Pro is good and satisfactory. The main 50-Megapixel camera (Sony IMX766) used is the same sensor used on the previous Find X5 Pro. The camera application has an easy-to-use interface. Each included function is easily accessible and can be changed as needed. Next, the color and picture quality shows results similar to the flagship device.

Pictures show consistently bright results with satisfying detail. Clearly, there is no overexposure problem, in fact it is improved with satisfactory results. Furthermore, color reproduction is also vibrant with no additional editing required. AI Scene Enchancement artificial intelligence system facilitates the process of subject recognition according to the situation then suggests the best shot. The ability of the ultra-wide lens is also good with the results of pictures in various situations that can be taken without problems. The ability to record at night is also satisfactory. The picture is not only brighter but looks lively.

However, we have to give a negative comment on the ability of the portrait that cannot be modified on the background after the picture is taken. Next, the lack of support for built-in OIS is the most significant issue that exists on this device. Next, the 2MP macro sensor is also considered a cheap gimmick. Its existence is considered merely for the purpose of increasing sales and purely cosmetic value. Because the picture results are not only unattractive, but the details are not taken care of well.

The included 4,500mAh battery is capable of working well for daily use. Our experience found that the device's durability can reach 10 hours with normal use. As usual, battery life on a device depends on the usage pattern of each. The device can also last a full day with regular use. Recharging can be done completely in 40 minutes with an 80W charger.

Conclusion

In terms of design Oppo Reno8 Pro has a good design. It is very comfortable to hold in the hand with a boxy body and a flat screen. The main strength of the Oppo Reno8 Pro is its camera capabilities, which are as good as their flagship devices. Most of them have picture quality that can be recorded well without the need for additional editing. However, the lack of OIS and the use of a macro sensor slightly mars this device.

Next, performance is also good where it works smoothly with no extreme issues encountered throughout the review period. Applications can also launch well due to the combined size of RAM and good storage. ColorOS 12.1 also includes a variety of good functions, especially password control to turn off devices that feel good for safer security. However, the built-in bloatware issue bugged us a bit. But it can still be removed if you want. Not to be outdone, the battery life is also good which is matched by the 80W fast charging system.

In short, this is Oppo's answer for those of you who wish to experience the imaging system on the Oppo Find X5 Pro. However, it is still not perfect because there will be those who think the selling price is high. But as we know, Oppo has its own fans. The closest competitors for Oppo Reno8 Pro are Poco X4 GT 5G and Realme GT Neo3 with the same chip generation.
