How is garbage disposed of from the International Space Station (ISS)? This is one of the hardest questions to answer because we don’t have astronauts on duty in it. The real answer is that it was brought back to earth using a spacecraft before being disposed of.
But the ISS now has a new garbage disposal system that pushes it back to earth before burning when it enters the atmosphere. The new system by Nanoracks has already been installed and tested successfully this week with the disposal of 80 kilograms of garbage.
The system has enough space for 272 kilograms. Every year four astronauts produce 2500 kilograms of garbage that needs to be sent back to earth. With the Nanoracks system, garbage will burn completely without polluting the earth.
