Apple faced various lawsuits and became the focus of various consumer rights bodies for ordering payments to be made only through their App Store ecosystem. Only recently has flexibility been given to "reader" applications to offer customers the option of making payments outside of the application.
This week the Netflix app for iOS and iPadOS finally offers users the option to do things outside of the app. There is a link in the application which then directs the user to the subscription portal through a web browser.
In fact, Netflix no longer offers the option to subscribe in the application since 2018. But during this time they were also prevented by Apple from providing external links in the application because it violates the terms of the App Store. A 30% cut will be taken by Apple for every transaction if done through the App Store.
