WhatsApp chats are suddenly deleted, it's really annoying. WhatsApp users may lose important information shared in chats, including contacts, documents, photos, and more.
WhatsApp chat itself can disappear suddenly due to various factors, for example when a user moves to a new cellphone or accidentally deletes his chat list.
Fortunately, WhatsApp has an easy way to recover deleted chats. WhatsApp doesn't store user chats on its servers, but directly on Google Drive or internal memory on your phone so that lost or deleted chat history can be easily recovered.
But before trying to restore deleted WhatsApp chats, first make sure that all your WhatsApp chats have been backed up by following these steps:
How to backup WhatsApp chats on Android
Open the WhatsApp application then tap the three-dot menu in the upper right corner and select Settings > Chats > Backup
Select the Google account that you want to use to save chat backups. You can also make local backups by using the internal memory
Tap the Back Up button
Wait a few moments until the backup process is complete.
How to backup WhatsApp chats on iOS
Open WhatsApp settings on iPhone then select Chats option > Chat Backup > Backup Now
You can activate the scheduled automatic backup feature by tapping 'Auto Backup' and selecting the backup frequency
Your chats and media will be backed up to your iCloud account and you can choose to include videos in the backup or not. Wait a while until the backup process is complete, depending on the size of the backup and internet connection.
After making sure all your WhatsApp chats have been backed up, you can rest easy because if one day there are deleted or lost chats that can be easily restored.
WhatsApp provides three ways to restore deleted chats on Android, namely by using backups on Google Drive, local backups, and rather old local backups. As for iPhone WhatsApp chats can only be restored using an iCloud backup.
How to restore WhatsApp chats from Google Drive
Uninstall the WhatsApp application from the phone then install it again
Login WhatsApp as usual and verify your phone number
Select RESTORE when a prompt appears to restore chats and media from Google Drive
After the data recovery process is complete, tap NEXT. Your WhatsApp chat list will be displayed after this initial process is complete
WhatsApp will continue to recover media files such as photos and videos after the chat has finished restoring.
How to restore WhatsApp chats from local backup
Download a file manager application or the like if it's not already on your phone
Open the file manager application, then browse to the local storage folder or SD card and look for the WhatsApp > Databases folder.
Copy the latest backup file to the Databases folder on the SD card and move it to the folder with the same name in the internal memory
Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp then login using your phone number.
Restore WhatsApp chat history by tapping the Restore button.
How to restore WhatsApp chats from a rather old local backup
Download a file manager app if you don't have one on your phone
Open the file manager application then look for the WhatsApp folder > Databases in the internal memory or SD card
Rename the backup file you want to restore from msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12 to msgstore.db.crypt12
Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp
Tap RESTORE if prompted to restore chats.
How to restore from iCloud backup
Make sure the iCloud backup already exists by going to WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup
If you can see when the backup was last run, uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp
Login as usual using your phone number and follow the steps for account verification
Follow the on-screen instructions to restore deleted WhatsApp chats.
