The government in the last Budget 2022 has shared that it plans to introduce an import tax on low-value goods under RM500 that are bought online.
In parallel, now the Ministry of Finance has started presenting a Bill for it in Parliament, to be approved.
Through this change in legislation, low-value goods under RM500 that are imported through online purchases will be subject to a 10% tax.
Today, low-value goods imported from abroad through online purchases are tax-free. However, for locally produced products, they are subject to a tax of between 5% and 10%.
Through the amendment of this bill, it ensures fairness between locally produced products and imported products.
This bill is expected to receive approval before the second parliamentary session ends on 4 August 2022.
