Borobudur and Komodo Offered to Enter the Metaverse

Meta wants to develop a metaverse in Indonesia. Borobudur and Komodo offered enter the metaverse.

That is one of the results of the meeting between the Minister of Communication and Informatics Johnny G Plate with Meta in Palo Alto, California, Thursday (28/7) or Friday (29/7/2022). Here, the Menkominfo tested Metaverse and met a number of Indonesian engineers at Meta.

"Bringing Metaverse to life requires new innovations at every level. We are happy to collaborate with partners in Indonesia to make Metaverse a reality," said VP of Connectivity Policy Meta, Monica Desai.

Minister of Communication and Information Johnny G Plate said the government offered Indonesia's super priority destinations to enter the Metaverse. On offer are Borobudur and Labuan Bajo temples including Rinca and Komodo islands.

"How can we take advantage of Metaverse's AR and VR technology so that the use of this digital technology can support tourism while keeping Borobudur well preserved," said Johnny.

Johnny took the example of Komodo on Rinca Island. With the metaverse, tourists can observe the movement of Komodo dragons with VR, so they don't disturb their habitat.

"To maintain the preservation of Komodo dragons and our safety, we came to Rinca Island, to witness the Komodo dragons directly. We can go through VR so that there is a direct experience of how to observe Komodo dragons through the metaverse," he concluded.

The Meta and Kominfo talks also included discussing the digital economy, a healthy digital space and the development of Indonesian digital talent. The deployment of submarine cables from the west coast of America and Indonesia by Meta is also a strategy on the upstream side to strengthen connectivity.

"Also the frequency spectrum, including the one specifically needed for Meta at 6 GB, we will see later, we will study," he concluded.
