Epic Games Blocked by Kominfo makes it difficult for local game developers to work

Epic Games has not yet listed the Private Electronic System Operator (PSE). The Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) was forced to block it.

This does not only have an impact on the various games it offers, through the Epic Games Store page. But it also closes access to their game engine product, titled Unreal Engine.

This is because, to be able to use this game development application, you must go through a launcher that is already installed on your PC or laptop. Now, because Kominfo has blocked access to Epic Games, there are some developers who have difficulty using Unreal Engine.

One of them is experienced by a local game developer, Gamecom Team. Josevina Gaby, Community Manager of Gamecom Team, said that her team was disturbed by the blocking.

"With the blocking of Epic Games, programmers have difficulty accessing the Unreal Engine in order to develop the game," said Josevina Gaby to us, Monday (8/8/2022).

In addition, Jose added, due to the blocking of Kominfo, they as developers became more wary. This is because, there are still many applications/websites that need to be used by game developers, which have not been registered with the PSE Private Scope and are in danger of being blocked.

"Such as Adobe, Unity, and other applications that become tools for the development of a game," he added.

As we all know, Epic Games is included in the 100 PSE with the highest traffic in Indonesia. But until the appointed time, they have not registered themselves.

Unlike Steam, Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Origin, which is finally free from the snares of blocking Kominfo. The four of them are now freely accessible by gamers in the country.

A little information, this Private Scope PSE Registration has been mandated by Government Regulation Number 71 of 2019 concerning Electronic System and Transaction Operators, as well as Minister of Communication and Informatics Regulation Number 5 of 2020 concerning Private Scope Electronic System Operators (PSE).

Through this PSE rule, companies that operate digitally, such as having a website or application, operate in the territory of Indonesia. This registration obligation is addressed to both foreign and local companies.
