Red light stop, green light go. This is a basic thing taught since kindergarten when trying to cross the street. But with more and more people using smartphones, sometimes they are so careless with the device that they don't even notice the red light is on. There have been several incidents of accidents caused by ankle users.
In Hong Kong, a new lighting system at road crossings has been introduced to prevent negligent users from crossing the road. The system used in Hong Kong differs from the system that has also been tested in Germany and the Netherlands because the elongated red LED lights are placed on lampposts and not on the road surface.
When it lights up, the entire area before crossing will be bathed in red light and so will all individuals below it. In theory they would have noticed a bright red light and would have stopped before accidentally crossing the road.
Tests were conducted in four areas in Hong Kong with seven crossings equipped with this lighting system.
