Germany now has a train system that uses entirely hydrogen cells in the region of Saxony. Coradia iLint trains have been tested since 2018 and are now ready for widespread use with 11 units manufactured by Alstom due to be in operation by the end of 2022.
All of these hydrogen trains will only emit water during operation and reduce pollution. A total of 15 diesel trains used for the same route will be discontinued.
Each train has the ability to travel as far as 1000 kilometers per day with the hydrogen tank only needing to be filled once a day at the dept. It is capable of traveling at a speed of 140 km/h but is limited between 80-120 km/h only by the operator Eisenbahnen und Verkehrsbetriebe Elbe-Weser (EVB).
Apart from Saxony, Alstom said they will also supply the same trains to Frankfurt and Italy with some tests also being carried out in other European countries.
