Local Game Developer Screams Affected by Epic Games Blocked by Kominfo

The Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) is still closing access to Epic Games. As a result, one of the local developers, Gamecom Team, experienced difficulties in developing their new game, namely Troublemaker.

"For now, we as game developers are disturbed by the blocking of Epic Games. With the blocking of Epic Games, programmers have difficulty accessing the Unreal Engine in order to develop the game," said Josevina Gaby, Community Manager of Gamecom Team, to us, Monday (8/8/2022). ).

Jose said that Troublemaker's work focused on using the Unreal Engine, and this application was accessed through Epic Games. It's different from the two previous titles they've worked on, namely Babol the Walking Box and A Day Without Me, which utilize Unity's sophistication.

"In addition, due to the blocking of Kominfo, we as developers have become more wary, because there are still many applications/websites that need to be used by game developers, have not been registered on the PSE and are in danger of being blocked," said Josevina.

He also gives examples, such as Adobe, Unity, and other applications that are tools for developing a game. Jose also explained, to use Unreal Engine, you must use the Epic Games Launcher, which is already installed on your PC or laptop.

Well, to get around the closure of Epic Games access, his team also tried to do several things, such as empowering a Virtual Private Network (VPN). Then, use the internet network from a provider whose access is not blocked by Kominfo.

"Depending on the provider, in our team there are those who can (now he uses an internet provider that is rarely used so he can't be detected). Some can't access (generally internet providers that are big in the public), because they are still blocked by Kominfo so they have to use a VPN," said Josevina.

As previously reported, Epic Games is included in the 100 Electronic System Operators (PSE), with the highest traffic in Indonesia. But until the appointed time, they have not registered themselves.

Therefore, Kominfo was forced to block this video game giant. For those who do not know, this Private Scope PSE Registration has been mandated by Government Regulation Number 71 of 2019 concerning Electronic System and Transaction Operators, as well as Minister of Communication and Informatics Regulation Number 5 of 2020 concerning Private Scope Electronic System Operators (PSE).
