The Covid-19 pandemic has been successfully controlled and it can be said that the majority of the world's population is no longer afraid of contracting this deadly disease. The introduction of various vaccines helped reduce public anxiety and prevent the number of deaths from continuing to rise sharply.
Moderna was one of the first companies to successfully produce a Covid-19 vaccine called Spikevax. But they have filed a lawsuit against Pfizer-BioNTech alleging that the vaccine produced by the company infringes on the mRNA patent developed by them. Moderna says Pfizer-BioNTech is making a profit while they spend high costs developing mRNA technology. All of these technologies were patented between 2010 and 2016.
Pfizer-BioNTech reportedly made around $22 billion in revenue from their vaccine sales while Moderna only made $10 billion. After the suit was filed, Pfizer-BioNTech denied they were using Moderna's mRNA technology and were instead using their own proprietary technology.
Moderna wants Pfizer-BioNTech to pay royalties on vaccine revenue sold after March 8, 2022 except for those sold to the United States government and indigent countries.
