14 Interesting Things iPhone 14 And 14 Pro Owners Should Try

Happy Apple iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max days which can be purchased in Malaysia starting today. Just a week after the first wave of markets such as neighboring Singapore and Thailand.

We got early access to the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro this week and we think there are 10 things owners of the newly purchased device should try to optimize its use. Hopefully with this list you will quickly be able to use some features that are hidden or not activated by default on the iPhone 14 series.

1. Always On Display – Turn Off To Save Battery

The Always on Display (AOD) feature has finally arrived on iPhone for the first time in history after years of being supported on Android devices. The implementation of AOD on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max is different than on Android because the screen is simply darkened and the background image changes to monochrome. Indeed it looks more attractive but we realize it has an impact on battery life compared to the iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 Pro Max which do not support AOD.

Turn off AOD by going to Settings > Display & Brightness > Awalys On. We found that battery life can be increased by up to two hours if AOD is turned off.

2. Activate Apple ProRAW 48MP Mode On Camera

The ProRAW feature has been a given since the iPhone 12 Pro. With photos taken in RAW format, sharper and more detailed images can be captured but the size becomes large. By default ProRAW is not enabled on the iPhone camera app. On this year's iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, ProRAW can be taken at 12MP or 48MP resolution settings.

ProRAW mode and image size can only be activated through the Settings screen. This is done by going to Settings > Camera > Formats > Pro Raw Resolution > 48/12 MP. In the camera application now the button to use ProRAW can be pressed if you want to use it.

3. More Clear Battery Percentage

The battery percentage can be displayed again on the battery icon through iOS 16. This feature has not been provided since the iPhone X was released because there was no room to put it on the top tray. Therefore you can reactivate the capacity percentage display in the battery icon by going to Settings > Battery > Battery Percentage. No more pulling down the notification tray just to see the remaining battery percentage.

4. Haptic Response On Keyboard

Many Android users have migrated to the iPhone lately due to their increasingly healthy personal economic status and desire for a longer supported device. We're among those who have moved on but miss the keyboard's haptic feedback feature when typing that the iPhone doesn't support. Through iOS 16, the haptic feature is finally given and it can be activated by going to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Keyboard Feedback. Activate Haptic from the given menu. As a reminder Apple says activating haptics will reduce the device's battery life.

5. Turn off ProMotion 120Hz

The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max screens support a 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate. We enable it because it provides a smoother device experience. But we realize there are still some who are quite happy with 60Hz and prioritize battery life over a fast screen. You can turn off 120Hz ProMotion by going to Settings > Accessibility > Motion > Limit Frame Rate. Screen refresh rate will be limited to 60 Hz only if this feature is enabled.

6. Manual Macro Button On Camera

Macro mode on iPhone 14 phones is activated automatically when the 3D ToF sensor detects an object located close to the lens. Sometimes you don't want this feature to be enabled or want to force it to be on. By default there is no button to access macro mode as provided on Android devices.

For iPhone 14 owners who want manual macro control with a separate button, go to Settings > Camera > Macro Control. On the camera application interface there will now be a tulip-shaped icon. Press this button to manually activate/deactivate macro mode.

7. Use Action Mode For More Stable Video

Action Mode is an exclusive feature of the iPhone 14 series that stabilizes video recording. It's similar to the Super Steady feature on Galaxy flagship devices. With Action Mode, a more stable video as if using a gimbal can be recorded even if the user is running. To use it select video mode on the camera app and press the running person icon that appears next to night mode on the interface. When it is active, iPhone 14 will give a yellow alert in the viewfinder.

8. Remove Home Control From Control Center

By default Home Control will be displayed on the Control Center screen after the device is activated for the first time. This also happens on iPhones that have just been updated to iOS 16. This causes the Control Center to become a bit of a mess as there are extra buttons to access Home Kit features.

We don't have electronics that support the internet of things (iOT), so this Home Control display is just a hassle. You can remove it by going to Settings > Control Center > Show Home Controls. Turn off Show Home Controls and now your Control Center screen will look neater.

9. iPhone 14 Makes a Sound When Turned On or Off

Another exclusive feature of the iPhone 14 is that the device makes a sound when it is turned on or off. This feature gives it the same capabilities as a macOS computer. But on the iPhone 14 it is provided to make it easier for the visually impaired to know that their phone has been successfully turned off or is being turned back on. To use this feature go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual > Turn On & Off Sounds.

10. Put Phone Number For Emergency Or Lost Device

This year's iPhone 14 is sold at a starting price of RM4199 and reaches a price of RM8299 for the iPhone 14 Pro Max with 1TB storage. If lost you will definitely want it returned safely. To increase this probability there are several steps that can be taken. First of all put the emergency information on the Apple Health profile. Open the Health application on your device and enter the Emergency Contacts information under the Medical ID setting of this application to fill in the person who should be contacted if the phone is lost. Then on the option Show When Locked > Enabled.

If the device is lost, the Emergency button will be displayed when the device is attempted to be unlocked. If those who find your phone have good intentions, they will press the Emergency button to access the Medical ID button. The emergency phone number selected earlier can then be contacted.

Another way is to use the Find My feature on another device (MacBook, iPad or iPhone) that uses the same Apple ID. Mark the lost device as Lost. Then fill in the phone number information and a short message that you want to be displayed on the lock screen when the device is found by the public.

11. Crash Detection That Detects Serious Accidents

Crash Detection is a feature given to the iPhone 14 series, Apple Watch SE (Gen 2), Apple Watch Series 8, and Apple Watch Ultra that can detect if the user is involved in an accident. It automatically makes an emergency call and sends a complete notification with the location of the accident to family members/friends placed in the Emergency Contact list in the Health application.

Activate this feature by going to the Health app and pressing the personal face icon in the top right corner of the app. Go to Featured > Health Checklist > Crash Detection > Call After Serious Crash. Don't forget to activate location tracking by going to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Emergency Calls & SOS.

12. Turn off Optimized Battery Charging

Optimized Battery Charging optimizes battery charging after it reaches 80% to extend battery life. Through individual charging habits, the iPhone will slow down the charging process from 80% to 100% and it will only be completed at a certain time such as 6 am for example when you wake up at dawn. But this causes the charging to slow down after 80%. If you don't want the charging to slow down after 80% turn it off by going to Settings > Battery > Battery Health > Optimized Battery Charging.

13. Flash Lights For Notifications

Phone ringing and app notifications are annoying when in a meeting. Many times we forget to reactivate the iPhone ringtone when it is muted. As a result, many phone calls and notifications were not noticed by us. To prevent this issue from happening, we like to activate the flashing LED light feature when receiving a phone call or notification. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual > LED Flash For Alerts. There is an option to only activate this feature if the phone is placed in silent mode. The iPhone's LED light is so bright that it's almost impossible to miss a phone call even when the device is on mute.

14. Back Tap – Launch Apps And Take Screenshots With Back Panel Tap

Back Tap is not a new feature but we recommend it to everyone because it's like a special button on the iPhone like the one on the Sony Xperia 1 phone. We use Back Tap to launch the camera when the back of the iPhone is double tapped. Tap three times to take a screenshot. You can change yourself what action will be performed with Back Tap. To use it go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap.

With the 14 important, interesting and accessible features we shared above we hope iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max users can use their devices better and become aware of features that might be hidden.
