Google is now sharing that Android 14 in 2023 will include support for satellite communication connections.
This was shared by Hiroshi Lockheimer, saying that their team is currently designing for satellite communications. In the partnership, he also looked back to last 2008, where they faced challenges in ensuring 3G and WiFi were operational, and now after a few years, development is involving satellite communication.
This latest development comes alongside rumors that Apple will introduce the iPhone 14 with satellite communication support. In addition to Apple, Huawei is also expected to do the same through the latest HarmonyOS that will be introduced next week.
Wild to think about user experiences for phones that can connect to satellites. When we launched G1 in '08 it was a stretch to get 3G + Wifi working. Now we're designing for satellites. Cool! Excited to support our partners in enabling all of this in the next version of Android!
