Car Manufacturers Must Apply For License To Collect Mapping Data In China

GPS navigation systems are now used every day to avoid traffic jams. For self-driving vehicles, it will be important to allow the vehicle to move independently to the destination. To ensure safety, mapping data from various sensors and cameras is collected by vehicle manufacturers. But in China now vehicle manufacturers have to apply for a license from the government before being allowed to collect this data.

The license is effective immediately starting today. The reason given by the Chinese government is that the collection of mapping data in the country by vehicles could cause security issues for the country if it falls into the hands of other countries. Issues about the security of this mapping data caused an incident where Tesla cars were prevented from entering the city where President Xi Jinping was visiting.
