EU Wants All Android Phone Manufacturers to Offer Up to 5 Years of Updates

Today, one of the big problems involving Android device manufacturers, is the lack of support for a long period of time. This, at the same time, makes some Android devices less relevant in the period after 2-3 years of their release.

It indirectly leads to the problem of electronic waste dumping. The European Union (EU) seems to want to overcome this problem, and is currently drafting new legislation.

Through it, Android manufacturers are required to support a device for a longer period, and offer software updates for it.

For future Android devices, the EU stipulates that they should receive at least 3 major Android version updates, and up to 5 years of security updates.

For now, this is still in the draft stage. But, it will indirectly lead to more serious software support – at least in Europe, and may have a positive effect on the global market.

Let's all look forward to more regarding this new legislation in the EU.
