Instagram Is Developing A Feature To Prevent Porn Images From Being Received In DMs

Social media is like a double-edged sword. When used positively it strengthens the relationship between friends and relatives. On the other hand it can also be used for nefarious purposes where predators send obscene messages directly into the account owner's DM. Realizing this serious issue has been going on for a long time, a feature to prevent pornographic images from being received in DMs is being developed by Instagram.

A feature named "Nudity Protection" was discovered by Alessandro Paluzzi, a smart device application developer through his Twitter page. The system will automatically detect images that may contain pornographic elements when activated. Then the picture will be obscured from the account owner's view. Tips will be given to the recipient on what actions can be taken next.

Finally this feature can be turned off by the user. Instagram will not see the images sent instead it all operates at the system level to ensure privacy. Meta has confirmed to The Verge that they will share more about this feature in just a few weeks.

This DM screening system is similar to the system introduced by Apple last April to ensure the safety of underage users.
