The latest rapid test or rapid test is claimed to be able to detect the flu and COVID-19 at once in a few minutes. This tool can already be used in Australia.
The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has approved two test kits capable of detecting both pathogens on one device.
"This can distinguish between COVID-19 and flu, the main type is influenza A/B," said Steve Quinlin of Touch Biotechnology, quoted from 9News.au, Sunday (11/9/2022).
A test kit package, priced at 15 Australian dollars. The device will be available to order online or at supermarkets and pharmacies in the next few weeks.
"We have an accuracy of more than 98% so it is very high. Users can be very confident in their test results and feel comfortable doing this test," said Quinlin.
Although it is not yet on par with the gold standard, PCR experts say its accuracy is a major improvement.
"Being able to test accurately and quickly for flu and COVID is a major advance, important for users in the household, workplace and especially in the elderly care center," said infectious disease expert Professor Robert Booy.
As part of the approval requirements, TGA requires suppliers to provide continuous quality and performance data.
The kit will also undergo independent testing in two laboratories including the Peter Doherty Institute in Melbourne.
"What's really important when you get a new test is that you check if it's working properly, and find out what it's meant to be," says Booy.
