BMW iDrive is an infotainment system that has been used in BMW cars since 2001. In 2018, BMW started to launch a virtual assistant or digital assistant called BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant that allows their users to interact with the inforia system while driving hands-free.
Now, BMW has partnered with Amazon to integrate Amazon Alexa into iDrive. The new generation of BMW vehicles will use inforia that has Alexa. According to Amazon this is an example of what the ability of Alexa Custom Assistant can do, which is to let external companies use existing technology and change it so that it can be adapted to their respective products.
With many people already familiar with Alexa such as using voice commands to control music, connected devices and more – consumers will be more comfortable with Alexa in BMW vehicles. BMW will also allow users to choose whether to use Alexa, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant or both.
The first vehicle that will use the BMW iDrive inforia with Alexa will be launched in two years.
