We now live in a world where devices will be replaced on average every three years. An increase from about two years just a decade ago. Increasingly expensive devices make people no longer want to change them often. But to ensure that devices can be used for longer, the European Commission (EC) wants manufacturers to offer spare parts for smartphones and tablets for five years.
A total of 15 main components such as screen, battery, back panel and more have to be offered by the manufacturer for half a decade. If spare parts were offered for longer, the EC believes electronic waste equivalent to the pollution of 5 million vehicles could be reduced.
The battery on the device should initially retain 80% capacity after undergoing 1000 charging cycles. All of these will be included in the Environmental Coalition on Standards (ECOS) later. Previously the EC has passed a bill standardizing the use of USB-C on European electronic devices also to reduce electronic waste.
