One technological barrier after another was put in place by the United States to prevent China from developing their technology this year. According to a Bloomberg report, the Joe Biden administration is reportedly planning to prevent China from importing quantum computer technology and artificial intelligence software from the United States.
Planning is still in the early stages according to sources who did not want to be identified. Both of these technologies are still in their infancy and preventing them from being accessed by China is a way to stunt the progress made so far. Only the United States and China have quantum computers at this time.
The Baidu Qian Shi quantum computer that was announced last August is equipped with a 10 Quantum Bit (Qubit) chip compared to Google Sycamore which is equipped with a 56 Qubit chip that was shown in 2019. With high processing capabilities, the quantum computer can perform artificial intelligence (AI) processes, system training self-driving, and predict the weather faster. It also has useful functions for military purposes such as simulating nuclear weapons.
The latest technology from the United States is now barred from being exported to China because the U.S. says it may then be shared with the military to develop weapons that could endanger national security. AMD and NVIDIA are now barred from selling AI chips to China. DJI is included in the list of entities. Access to new technology chip printing machines has also been blocked this year.
