The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) has published the Malaysian Cause of Death Statistics 2022 which presents the main death statistics in Malaysia for the year 2021. There were 224,569 deaths reported with 127,824 deaths from men and 96,745 deaths from women. On average 1 death every minute is reported in Malaysia in 2021.
Covid-19 was the biggest contributor to death with 19.8% followed by heart disease (13.7%), pneumonia (11.1%), cerebrovascular disease (6.5%) and accidents (1.9%). Covid-19 is also the biggest contributor to death in the age groups of 15-40 years, 41-59 years and 60 years and above.
Throughout 2021 as well, the Malay race recorded the highest number of deaths with 84,265 cases, followed by Chinese (36,234), Indians (14,856) and other Bumiputeras (13,908). Lastly, the states with the highest number of deaths are Selangor (31,391), Johor (16,936) and Perak (15,425).
