Leading drone manufacturers DJI and China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) were put on a blacklist that prevents any form of investment by companies from the United States. Action was taken because the two companies allegedly had military ties to the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA).
The list issued by the United States Department of Defense (DOD) consists of 13 companies from China. All of them were blacklisted because the technology developed was believed to be shared with the PLA to be used for military purposes.
Since 2017, the U.S. military has banned the use of DJI drones by personnel due to concerns that sensitive data will be shared with China for espionage purposes.
In order to curb the use of US-owned technology for PLA use, the US has imposed various economic sanctions on more than 60 companies from China. Recently AMD and NVIDIA were barred from selling artificial intelligence chips to Chinese companies for the same purpose. The export of advanced chip printing machines is now also blocked forcing China to quickly develop its own technology so as not to be left behind.
