Google Has Tested the Iris Scanning Feature on the Pixel 2

A few years ago, before FaceID and facial scanning features to unlock devices became a trend, device manufacturers only used fingerprint scanning. In 2018, Samsung introduced an iris scanner through the Galaxy S8 and S8+ that promises better security.

Then on the Samsung Galaxy S9 they combine it with face scanning through Intelligent Scan. But did you know that Google has also tested the iris scanner feature on Pixel devices? This device is the Pixel 2, or rather one of the Pixel 2 prototypes.

This was discovered by Internal Archive via a Pixel 2 prototype unit codenamed Walleye (EVT-E). It is said to be an early unit with many important elements of the device and software incomplete.

The infrared sensor for iris scanning is in front around the forehead of the device. It is on the left and right and requires the IrisDemo app for authentication and registering the iris on the device. In this application there are also instructions for the user to see the screen specifically.

But this feature is not introduced on Pixel devices with Pixel 3 using two front sensors for dual-camera selfies and Pixel 4 using Soli radar sensor for face scan. Do they realize iris scans are irrelevant and facial scans with artificial intelligence are the future? what do you say
