Microsoft Reportedly Has No Plans For HoloLens – IVAS For The Military Is Also In Trouble

At yesterday's Meta Connect event, Microsoft announced support for Office 365, Teams and Xbox Cloud Gaming on the Meta Quest platform. A bit of a surprise announcement as Microsoft has their own HoloLens headset that is more capable than the Meta.

According to a Business Insider report, this is because at this time Microsoft does not have any future plans for HoloLens. The situation of Microsoft's XR program also lost direction after Alex Kipman who is the founder of HoloLens left the company.

Without a long-term direction, Microsoft is now focusing on the development of Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) headsets used by the military. The program was also problematic with the program being delayed due to durability issues on the battlefield and the light from the headset could be seen by the enemy at night endangering the lives of the infantrymen wearing it. The issue of the headset being too heavy and blocking the view was also reported

Microsoft will fulfill contracts with the United States military only at this time with plans for the same technology used in the aeronautics industry and 3D mapping system services in the field.
