With a 3.1 Gigapixel Sensor, This Is the World's Largest Digital Camera

The largest sensor on a smartphone is the 200MP used on the Xioami 12T Pro and Motorola Edge 30 Ultra. However, the size of this sensor is dwarfed when compared to the sensor used on the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) camera which currently holds the record as the world's largest digital camera.

The LSST sensor is 3.1 Gigapixel with a physical size of 1.57 meters. This is the same sensor that took the world's first 3.1 GP image by Stanford researchers in 2020. A total of 189 CCD sensors were used to produce the camera that was then placed in the Vera C. Rubin observatory under construction in Chile. When operational, the LSST camera will capture 15 terabytes of data every night for 10 years to survey the billions of planets and stars in space.

Because of its large size, a special cooling system is required to ensure the temperature of the sensor is always at -100 °C to reduce noise in the images taken. Because of its large size, the entire camera weighs 3 tons and took seven years to build. It will then be installed at the Vera C. Rubin observatory in May 2023 before taking its first pictures by 2024.
